Houston Engineering Schools & Programs

Students have plenty of options for obtaining the bachelor's degree needed for work in the various engineering fields. Four-year degrees in various engineering disciplines are offered at the University of Houston and Rice University. Both universities also offer graduate degrees necessary for advanced engineering work in research and development. Students can also pursue a bachelor's degree in engineering technology at Texas Southern University. Associate degrees from Houston Community College or San Jacinto College will allow graduates to enter the engineering field as technicians or in other low-level work.

There are plenty of engineering jobs in the Houston area with more to come. In 2002, the area boasted nearly 59,000 jobs for engineers and engineering technicians, according to the Texas Workforce Commission. This number is expected to grow to nearly 64,000 by 2012, a growth of 8 percent. The fields with the most growth in that time will be civil engineering, environmental engineering and petroleum engineering.

An average of 500 new jobs a year open to engineers and engineering technicians, according to the Texas Workforce Commission.
