Houston Environmental Schools & Programs

Houston has various educational options for environmental students including several private and public schools that offer environmental studies programs and many more schools offering degrees in related areas such as biology and chemistry. The University of Houston, with several campuses in the Houston area, is a good option for students seeking a bachelor of science with programs in environmental science and environmental systems and modeling. Rice University, ranked 17th in U.S. News and World Report's 2006 overall college rankings, is a top-ranked option offering a bachelor degree in environmental engineering sciences and a master's degree in civil and environmental engineering.

Environmental occupations in the Houston area are expected to grow significantly through 2012. The highest projected growth is for environmental science and protection technicians with a predicted 45% job growth rate between 2002 and 2012. The number of environmental engineering positions is also projected to grow significantly through 2012 with a projected increase of 41.2%. This increase will be supported by good growth in the number of environmental engineering technician positions with a projected increase of 33.3%, and although not quite as impressive, the growth rate for environmental scientists and specialists is also predicted to be good at 27.6%.
