The University of Houston School of Communication offers a communication degree with a media production concentration. Sam Houston State University offers a bachelor of mass communications program with a broadcast production emphasis. Houston Community College offers non-academic one-year certificates in film production and editing. In addition, the Art Institute of Houston has a media arts program that allows students to focus on video, and the North Harris Montgomery County Community College District offers a video and post-production certificate.
The occupational projections for Houston and surrounding counties are fairly static. While media and communication workers (a category which includes announcers, reporters/correspondents, and editors among others) are projected to encounter a 14.3% increase in the number of jobs between 2002 and 2012 (an increase of approximately 50 positions over 10 years), and technical occupations related to media broadcast such as A/V and broadcast technicians show no anticipated gains in employment numbers. However, jobs should still become available when existing positions are vacated, as no reduction in the number of jobs is anticipated either.
