There are two very highly regarded schools of music in Houston. The Moores School of Music is located at the University of Houston, and the Shepherd School of Music is at Rice University. Both of these institutions offer very prestigious undergraduate and postgraduate performing arts programs for musicians and singers. Positions at Rice in particular are vied for by students worldwide. Dancers and actors can receive performing arts training as well as teaching accreditation at the University of Houston.
The job market in Houston for musicians and singers is booming with a growth of 33% predicted through 2012. This is twice the average growth rate for predicted for jobs in all disciplines and reflects the proportion of cultural organizations in the city that are devoted to music. City-specific statistics are not available for dancers and actors, but if a city can support two professional ballet companies and a junior company, there should be work available for those that are keen enough to go out and find it.
