Several Houston universities offer psychology degrees, including Rice University, which has seven research interest groups including cognitive, industrial-occupational, and perception. The University of Houston offers a bachelor of arts and a bachelor of science in psychology. The University of St. Thomas features a program focused on empirical research methods and preparation for graduate study. Sam Houston State University in nearby Huntsville and Lamar University in Beaumont are also home to psychology departments.

Psychology employment prospects in Houston look very promising. Employment for clinical, counseling and school psychologists for the area is expected to grow 25.8% between the years 2002-2012. Employment of educational, vocational, and school counselors is expected to increase by 21.3%, employment of mental health counselors is projected to grow by 22.%, and employment of rehabilitation counselors is expected to grow by 19.1%.
